Evaluating designer’s ideas and concepts.

Lane Crawford S/S 2013

This fashion video of Nick Knight's edited image explosions are like shards of  shattered glass bursting from the models, and pausing before retreating and reshaping. It has an element of Anime accompanied with distortion and repetition.

Giles Deacon 'The Troubadour' dress from A/W 2007

I love the use of opposing colours in this video. The striking green battling with the shadowing red, in order to achieve victory of the subject.

Dice Kayek / Marie Schuller - Noir

Amidst the beauty of the film lies a fairly sinister undertone, with symbols of shattered relationships and death, finally indicating freedom. The skeletal figures represent not only death, but also change. The smoky scenes portray a tense atmosphere to the viewer and the smashed mirror is symbolic of shattered relationships and bad luck. When the girl runs in the rain, I feel this may show her sadness and when she jumps off the cliff and lands amongst the white petals, to me this indicates her release from pain into peace.

Zara Mia | The In Pieces Collection | Menswear | Autumn/Winter 2013-2014

This particular menswear collection is based on 18th century menswear. Influenced by a maritime theme within the designer’s collection, the video portrays a subtle use of props, such as the manipulation of the rope which resembles the fisherman’s knot, but is nothing more than a tangled attempt. Therefore the rope depicts the reduction of knowledge in the shipping industry. The music is very soothing, yet in contrast, conjures up an element of longing, or even not belonging. The model is surrounded by rubble and giant concrete hollowed blocks and at one point he brandishes part of a branch, indicating a warrior like essence. Along with the graffiti, a strong impression of abandonment is present, which is parallel to a once thriving area that is now derelict. The images in daylight are obviously visible and detailed, and the transition from day to night highlights the lighter sections of fabric. The use of a searchlight, or spotlight, also runs alongside the naval based topic.

The collection itself is a mixture of men’s and women’s wear, with a clear emphasis on the traditional attributes of each sex, the feminine form displaying exaggerated soft curves and the masculine form focusing on strength and oversized angles. The colours are natural on the whole, with added strips of dark purples, mid yellows and sea-faring prints. The whole collection is filmed in isolated ruins and forsaken grounds filled with debris. This could possibly be an interpretation of how the shipping industry had reduced over time with the use of modern machinery, which then in turn, produces more abused land and unused docks.

House of Flora A/W 2013 - Marie Schuller / Marlon Rueberg

The House of Flora is well know for its pioneering style in hats, jewellery and accessories. This fashion film was made for the Autumn/Winter season of 2013, with Neus Olle, director of photography, assisting Schuller and Rueburg in the creation of an amazing art film, delivering an essence of disaster and world domination while showcasing their state-of-the-art creations.

The film begins with an explosion of colour amidst a blackened backdrop, which clearly represents a catastrophic event and its aftermath. This is apparent throughout the rest of the film, revealing a haze of tinted clouds and shimmering flashes of metallic flakes. The music begins with a culminating explosion, coinciding with the volatile visual effects. Excerpts from a composition called The Winding Path, performed by Soul Trace, are extracted using only parts of the arrangement. With arousing melancholic impressions and eerie undertones in the audio, the models appear in slow motion adorned with futuristic garb, each one appearing to be in either a state of heightened rage, fear or, in my opinion, even bloodlust. This would suggest the portrayal of chaos within an apocalyptic society, where few would survive and food would be sparse. There are momentary flashes of politcal and public figures within the film, including clips of Marilyn Monroe, George Bush and Anna Nicole Smith, to name a few.
On the whole, the video evokes a sense of destruction within our planet, be it within oneself or society as a whole, exposing truth to the phrase "the survival of the fittest".
