Nature in Fashion

Migration of Monarch Butterflies

Monarch butterflies originate from Central America, migrating to North America, flying a 4000 mile round journey. They feed in large numbers on flowers early autumn, then disappear until the spring.

To distinguish from the sex of this beautiful insect, note that the wings of the female have much darker veins, and the male's wings present a spot in the centre of each hind wing.

Their habitats vary from open fields to urban parks and gardens, which makes this a very extraordinary versatile insect.
