Contemporary and Historical Designers

You can find inspiration in everything”. Paul Smith.
Paul Smith is a contemporary designer who takes inspiration from many things. As a lover of rock music, a lot of his designs have been influenced by the music and the styles of artists such as David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd. He travels all over the world, collecting memorabilia, incorporating elements of them into his designs and anything vintage has also made an impact on some of his most loved fashion finery.

His Ready to Wear Collection for Spring 2014, offers a selection of sports influenced attire, some with geometric shapes, and a mixture of brightly coloured fabrics, including leather, satin, mesh and wool. Elements of movement are hidden within the geometric colour blocked shapes, with a hint of sporting stripes and zips visibly available.

Savile Row Company

Savile row is a part of Mayfair in Central London, and estate once owned by the Burlington family. The "Row" consists of a number of design shops tailoring high quality suits to perfection. Originally named Savile Street, it was named after Lady Dorothy Savile, Lord Burlington's wife. The "Street" was replaced with "Row" in 1810. By 1846, designer Henry Poole moved his family business there, and other designers followed suit. This was the beginning of the Savile Row known as "the golden mile of tailoring".
Gieves & Hawkes, began as two separate businesses, both tailored for different forces in the military. They amalgamated in 1974 and became a part of Savile Row.

Although both Paul Smith and the designers of Savile row have very stylish and quality tailoring, the classic style of London's most loved style street has kept the vintage style, with very little change over the years, apart from maybe the collar size, the leg width and the rise. Paul Smith, however, has elaborated on this classic suit, adding in splashes of lavish colour and patterns that can be related to sportswear. Zips are offset and leather and satins are contradicted with sweatbands for cuffs. His designs look just as luxurious, but more playful and practical.
